St Swithun’s Parish Logo Identity

A logo identity project for the Parish of St Swithun's based in West Sussex

The Client

St Swithun’s Parish needed a new identity. They were looking for three separate logo designs for the three churches in the Parish – St Swithun’s, St Barnabas and St Luke’s. All of the new logos needed to be identifiable as being the same parish, so three variations on a theme.

The Brief

Ultimately my aim with any logo project is to fully understand the organisation, business or product, and its target audience. I want to understand in detail what I’m designing the logo for and why. Alice provided me with a detailed brief which really helped me to get a good grasp on their aims for the project.
The group liked the idea of using the same logo, but in different colours for the different churches. They have one main church, with two much smaller daughter churches, so they liked the idea that having the same design would clearly link the smaller churches to the main one, but a different colour would allow them to have a bit of their own identity. They felt that incorporating a cross in some way was an important symbol and there were also practical considerations such as the ability to reproduce the logo in black and white (photocopying).

The Solution

The church would need to produce promotional materials themselves so I made sure that I included standard font options that could be found on any Mac or PC. I kept the designs simple so they could be easily reproduced by a photocopier.

The group had requested that the new logos have the following characteristics: Fresh, Lively, Welcoming, Vibrant, Eyecatching, Faith, Trust, Love and Hope. I tried to capture these in both the design and the colour choices used.

I feel the finished designs are bright, fresh and memorable. They will work well across a range of different media and can be used large and small.

"Charlotte guided us through every step of the design process with a great deal of patience, ensuring that each step and technical terms were explained and clear. She is very efficient and turned round work far more quickly than we were expecting. She obviously gave a lot of sensitive thought to the design, and was very good value for money."
